We read across disciplines on the web, collecting material, collecting this great big source of content.

The web connects two things rapidly.

There ate principals on the web that can make reading more fruitful.

Principles are:
Dispersed: news is a big part of the conversation. On the web, you can read dozens or hundreds over a few weeks. Not the same for daily delivery of newspapers. Shareable: thru IM, twitter, etc.
Connected: hyperlink is most important aspect of the web
Liberated: thru web standards based malleable presentation
Sustainable: lots of expensive people involved with content production
Generative: we create

SUSTAINABILITY

ADVERTISING

Advertising model in print is going to fail, brown says. But, ad networks across niche sites that include RELEVANT and UNOBTRUSIVE advertising are valuable, polite, for readers and advertisers.

Fusion ads promotes beautiful ads and create relationships with hyper relevant advertisers.

SUBSIDIES

a list apart is successful because it developed a community and created revenue models around those, including book publisher and event planning, and design firm happy cog

Type kit, brown spends half to 3/4 time on editorial for type kit, brining in contributors and developing content, which brings leads. Single best conversion source is from blog.

PATRONAGE MODELS

Shawn Blanc uses membership model to provide exclusive content to readers and members

Kickstarter... Worth paying attention to because of the way people are paying for books/content. The shape of content, raised three times as much as milestoned. Developing content about creating the content to keep funders in the loop.

Flow/Stock is bought thru patronage models. You buy the end product and the process.

The models are small, personal and focused on COMMUNITY.

Bt patronage is not scalable. Thousands of people working independently.

Distillation/relocation of content, first by RSS now taken further by instapaper, etc.

SERVICES

Pinboard offers archiving, bookmarking that promises to uphold data. Pay service made it possible to scale the business.

Reability offers rev share to publishers, represents new rev models for content production

Growth areas: maps, recommendation engines, playlists, annotations, digital executors.

ARE WE STILL READING?

Only 16 % or readers read every word in an article. Jakob nielson data. But skimming is for those who love the library more than any particular text.

reading content online is not passive, we are out there creating ourselves.
